About Us

If you are interested in real art - art that is inspired, sophisticated and exceptional, Frost Gully Gallery is the gallery for you. Founded in 1966, Frost Gully Gallery is Maine’s oldest, professional year-round gallery. It is the premier gallery when it comes to the very best of contemporary Maine artists. This was the first gallery in Maine to show the work of Maine’s very best artists - in Maine. Collaborating with some of New York’s best galleries, Frost Gully Gallery was the first Maine gallery to show the works of William Kienbusch, John Heliker, John Laurent, William Thon, Hans Moller, William Zorach, Leonard Baskin, Alan Gussow, Alan Magee and many other prominent Maine artists.

Frost Gully Gallery was launched in a Barn adjacent to Frost Gully in Freeport in 1966. It started year-round operation in 1971 when it was moved to a downtown location in Freeport and moved to Exchange Street in Portland in 1973. In 1983 the gallery was moved to the Performing Arts Center at 15 Forest Avenue in Portland. In 1991 the gallery moved to a beautiful multi-level space next to City Hall on Congress Street in Portland. The gallery celebrated the advent of the new millennium by returning to its original location and is now housed in a brand new optimal gallery space adjacent to the same Frost Gully at 1191 U.S. Route One in Freeport.

From the beginning, Frost Gully Gallery has been dedicated to the art of collecting and the creation of great art collections. Whether it might be a modest home with a few small beautiful works of art or a large corporate collection with a broad range of styles and media, this gallery approaches any project with a view to its exciting possibilities. As with any endeavor, experience is a great asset. Frost Gully gallery has had a hand in the development of hundreds of collections over a period spanning more than forty years.

Quality is what real art is all about. It is the very best, or it is not really art. In Maine, it is often difficult to wade through the maze of amateurish seagulls and lighthouses. That is where experience and good advice can be of great help. While it is true that contemporary Maine Art is more eclectic than it used to be, it is important to remember that Hartley, Homer, Hopper and Wyeth have painted great paintings of seagulls and lighthouses.

The gallery is very easy to reach from any direction. If you're coming East on Interstate 295, simply come to exit 24 in Freeport, take a right on Route One. The gallery is the third driveway on the right.

If you are in downtown Freeport, head East on Route One for a distance of 1¼ miles from L.L. Bean. The gallery is on your left.
