THOMAS CROTTY

Born 1934

Thomas Crotty’s work was recently the subject of a major retrospective exhibition at the Portland Museum of Art which prompted Edgar Allen Beam to suggest that “Tom Crotty’s Maine landscapes nonetheless belong in the luminous canon of Maine art along with those of Frederick Church, FitzHugh Lane, Rockwell Kent, Andrew Wyeth and Stephen Etnier.”

Since the retrospective, the gallery hasn't often been able to offer finished paintings of his work, as every piece has quickly found a home. "SPW #108" , "Red Reflection" and "Saddleback Ledge Light", all recent works, have gone into private collections.

Crotty’s work has been exhibited across this country and is included in major Museum and private collections in Maine and across the country. Crotty has also been the owner/director of this gallery for almost 40 years – the longest tenure of any gallery in Maine.
